Testing Simulink Models on Linux with TPT

Testing Simulink and Targetlink in the cloud with Linux? Why? It’s faster, it’s scalable and cost savings of up to 60% are possible.

Testing always requires three things:

  1. The test object – meaning, what is to be tested.
  2. An infrastructure with which the test object is stimulated, measured and evaluated.
  3. Test cases which, in the best case, generate meaningful stimuli.
Testing Simulink Models on Linux

The test object is what you want to check. If you use Simulink or Targetlink, you have corresponding models that are to be tested.  In TPT testing generated code is a lot faster than testing a model.

The speed of testing also depends on the infrastructure. To test Simulink or Targetlink models you need: TPT, Matlab, the operating system, the computing unit and, if necessary, the connected periphery.

For testing MATLAB Simulink models, MATLAB is needed as an environment. TPT is also indispensable if you want your software testing to be efficient and effective.

What remains is the operating system and the computing unit. For the operating system, you can choose between Windows and Linux.  But tests run faster on Linux.

Why? Because of fewer interrupts, less memory consumption, … and the list goes on.

It is important for you to know: Tests of models can now be run with TPT 19 and MATLAB under Linux.

You can get even faster if you run scalable tests in the cloud. For this we provide a Docker script for our TPT headless version. Docker offers you further advantages.

However, testing Simulink models on Linux also works with virtual machines (VM). At AWS these are called Amazon Machine Images (AMI). The advantage of starting with VM is that you don’t have to script immediately and can test your images in advance.

The operating costs of a Linux AMI instance are significantly lower (up to 60%) compared to a Windows AMI instance (cf. on-demand prices for EC2 in AWS).

Do you already have experience with TPT? Then you can start immediately. Our headless version can be found in our download section.
